Moreover, students taking an Introductory level GIS course in 2020 will likely be looking for jobs in a future that increasingly uses ArcGIS PRO. However, that is beginning to change and it is clear that ESRI is strongly encouraging its users to transition. As of 2020 the majority of GIS professionals (and thus most jobs) continue to use ArcMAP.
PRO is the more recent software and ESRI has stated that they are no longer developing ArcMAP (though they will continue to support it for years). ArcGIS ArcMap vs ArcGIS PROĪrcMap and ArcGIS PRO provide similar functionality in terms of tools for spatial analysis, data management and cartography. See the guidelines below and this video are some that I have provided to GIS students at many times in the past. While the best project is the one that students come up with themselves, sometimes, suggestions are helpful to get started.
NOTE: WSU Faculty and Staff should contact their Department IT staff for installation of ArcGIS PRO on office or lab computers. Or, perhaps you are that student looking for a GIS project. These accounts come with full licenses of ArcGIS Pro, the successor to ArcGIS Desktop and its ArcMap component, and can be used without the VPN service. ArcGIS PROĪrcGIS Pro requires that the user also has an ArcGIS Online user account that is connected to the WSU ArcGIS Online Organization and an active agreement with the WSU site license.
It is possible to purchase more than one license level: you can have a combination of Advanced, Standard, and Basic licenses. You can purchase subscription-based licenses of the stand-alone ArcGIS Pro application at any license level. Each successive level adds functionality to the previous level. WSU students and staff can use ArcGIS Online that is connected to the WSU AGOL Organization by sending an email to. There are three ArcGIS Pro license levels: Basic, Standard, and Advanced. In addition ESRI offers ArcGIS Online (AGOL) which provides tools to create, store and manage maps online ( some of which can be used for free). They also make “extensions” that extend the functionality of both ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap (i.e., Spatial Analyst or 3D Analyst).
